Our process

How a chimney sweep services visit actually goes.

Every step is specific to this service — no generic checklist, no surprises once we arrive.

  1. 01

Inspect fireplace, flue, damper & visible chimney

We open the damper, look up the flue, and visually check accessible chimney areas before any sweeping starts.

  2. 02

    Protect the room and hearth

Drop cloths cover the hearth, mantel, and surrounding flooring, and dust-containment is set up at the firebox opening.

  3. 03

Sweep soot and creosote from the flue

Rotary brushes and rods are worked up through the full accessible flue to break up creosote and soot.

  4. 04

Remove loose debris and check for blockages

Fallen mortar, bird and squirrel nests, leaves, and other obstructions are removed from the firebox and smoke chamber.

  5. 05

Check draft and visible safety issues

We check the damper operation, look for cracked tiles or deteriorating mortar, and confirm the chimney drafts properly.

  6. 06

Clean the work area and explain next steps

The hearth and firebox are vacuumed clean and we walk you through what we found and any recommended follow-up.

What chimney sweeping prevents

Every time you burn wood, a small amount of unburned fuel condenses inside your flue as creosote — a tar-like substance that's highly flammable. Once it builds up to about an eighth of an inch, a single hot fire can ignite it, and a chimney fire is what follows. The National Fire Protection Association recommends an annual inspection for exactly this reason.

Beyond creosote, we clear out the things you don't see: bird and squirrel nests, leaves, broken mortar, even the occasional brick that's fallen from a damaged liner. Each of these can block draft, push smoke into the room, or worse — push carbon monoxide back into the home.

Our process and inspection

We set up dust containment in the room, run rotary brushes and rods up through the flue, vacuum the firebox and smoke chamber, and perform a visual Level 1 inspection of the liner, damper, and crown. If we see anything that needs attention — a cracked tile, deteriorating mortar, missing cap — we'll show you photos and explain the options.

FAQ

Questions homeowners ask.

When is the best time to schedule a sweep?

Late summer through early fall — before fireplace season. We do book up quickly once the weather turns.

Will it make a mess in my living room?

No. We use drop cloths, sealed vacuums, and dust-control equipment specifically for chimney work.

Do you inspect the chimney too?

Yes — a visual inspection is part of every sweep, and we'll flag anything that needs further attention.

How often should I have my chimney swept?

Annually if you use the fireplace regularly. Every other year for occasional users — but always inspect annually.
