What chimney sweeping prevents
Every time you burn wood, a small amount of unburned fuel condenses inside your flue as creosote — a tar-like substance that's highly flammable. Once it builds up to about an eighth of an inch, a single hot fire can ignite it, and a chimney fire is what follows. The National Fire Protection Association recommends an annual inspection for exactly this reason.
Beyond creosote, we clear out the things you don't see: bird and squirrel nests, leaves, broken mortar, even the occasional brick that's fallen from a damaged liner. Each of these can block draft, push smoke into the room, or worse — push carbon monoxide back into the home.
Our process and inspection
We set up dust containment in the room, run rotary brushes and rods up through the flue, vacuum the firebox and smoke chamber, and perform a visual Level 1 inspection of the liner, damper, and crown. If we see anything that needs attention — a cracked tile, deteriorating mortar, missing cap — we'll show you photos and explain the options.
