Clean the lint trap every load
It sounds basic, but the lint trap is the first line of defense. A clogged trap forces lint past the screen and into the vent line, which is where fires actually start.
Replace foil and plastic flex with rigid metal
If your vent uses ribbed foil or plastic flex duct, replace it. These materials sag, trap lint in their ribs, and are documented fire hazards. Smooth rigid galvanized duct is the code-required material.
Annual professional cleaning
Even with good habits, lint builds up at elbows and at the exterior termination. Annual professional cleaning is the simplest and highest-impact safety step you can take.
